CAN

+ I can speak Hebrew and English.

– You can’t speak Japanese.

? Can she speak Arabic?

 

COULD

a. can עבר של

+   My grandfather could run very fast when he was young.

– She couldn’t help me.

? Could he read when he was five years old?

b. בקשה מנומסת

? Could you pass the salt, please?

 

MAY

a. עשוי

+ He may come tomorrow.

– She may not go with him.

b. רשאי

+ You may use a dictionary in the final exam

? May I use your bathroom?

– You may not use the internet in the final exam.

 

MIGHT

a.עשוי

+ They might go on a picnic tomorrow, but only if it doesn’t rain.

b. עלול

– Don't stand on the roof. You might fall.

c. היה עשוי/עלול

+ I hoped I might have the time, but I ended up being too busy.

– I thought that might not work, and I was right.

  

SHOULD

+ If your tooth aches, you should go to the dentist.

– I shouldn’t eat chocolate. I’m on a diet.

? Should I do my homework immediately after the lesson?

 

WOULD

+ If I had a lot of money, I would buy a sports car.

– I wouldn't do it, if I were you.

? Would you please email me the directions to your office?

  

WILL

+ I will call you tomorrow.

– I keep asking him to clean his room, but he won't do it.

? Will you please help me move this table?

MUST

a. חייב, מוכרח

+ I must finish this today.

? Must you be so noisy?

b. בטח, בטוח

– You must be exhausted after running a marathon.

 

MUSTN’T

– He mustn’t forget to walk the dog.
